The Beginning 2000

The genesis of Rockin' For A Cure, a musical benefit for ALS, began in 1999, shortly after Steve Weekes was diagnosed with ALS. While waiting for treatment at an ALS clinic, accompanied by siblings, Monica and John Weekes, Steve decided to create a live music fundraiser to help cure ALS. Steve had been the drummer for a dance band, Wall of Sound, and his friends in the band were eager to support Steve.

The Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps also played a pivotal role, contributing to the live music event, and helping generate an atmosphere of camaraderie among the audience, family, and volunteers. The date of the fundraiser was scheduled to coincide with the annual weekend of auditions for the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps, which occurred every year during the Thanksgiving weekend. former corps director for the Madison Scouts - Scott Stewart played an important role in the development of young men and this was true of Steve Weekes. Scott established the important link between the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps and Rockin' For A Cure by providing a rich ensemble of brass players to perform the Corps' traditional song, "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Muscular Dystrophy Association 2000-2004

During the first years of the benefit for ALS, the MDA of Southeastern Wisconsin provided the infrastructure to conduct a live music fundraiser. These first years were important for establishing the brand of the event, which centered on performances by the high-energy, brass-inspired music selections of Wall of Sound, and the Madison Scouts playing "You'll Never Walk Alone."

Stewardship by Madison Scouts Alumni 2005

During the early years of Rockin' For A Cure, a group of Madison Scouts Alumni, known as the "Milwaukee Group," began traveling to Madison for visits with Steve Weekes and were joined many times by Scott Stewart. These were enjoyable times. The gatherings with Steve, which included family members, John and Monica Weekes proceeded with little idea of what would come. Discussions eventually turned to the future of Rockin' For A Cure and in 2004, Steve Weekes asked Mike Anello to direct the event, and the Milwaukee Group was immediately drafted into service to plan and execute the 5th annual ALS benefit. Over the years, the group established an organizational structure and the current committee consists of the same Milwaukee Group, which is Glenn Moralez, Steve Moralez, Frank Gonzales, Tim Spilde, Dave Peters, and Mike Anello. Since 2004, the event has enjoyed significant support from the Madison Scouts Drum & Bugle Corps, Drum Corps International, Drum Corps World, and Alumni of the Madison Scouts.
